A woodcutter witnesses an ambush that leads to the rape of a noblewoman and the subsequent murder of her samurai husband by a bandit. Yet, in the recounting of the incidents at the trial, differing versions of the horrific series of events emerge from all those involved, thus raising questions about the reliability of subjective truth. Rashomon launched Japanese cinema on to the world stage and balances a brilliantly conceived, multi-perspective narrative with Akira Kurosawa’s kinetic directorial style.
